Life is uncertain. This past weekend, I was in Sioux City, IA asa dealer at the Siouxpercon Card Show. Left Friday morning, came back Sunday evening. Not a lot had changed at my place. My wife had done some laundry and some dishes. All of the minor stuff that you have to do living day to day. Went to bed that Sunday night happy that I was sleeping in my own bed. Even with my dog burrowing into my side, kicking me at random times and trying to claim the entire bed as his.

When I woke up on Monday, I was astonished to hear that just 20 miles away in the town of Highmore, SD (pop. 800) it had been hit with a wind gust of over 130 MPH. And the damage was intense. Roofs no longer attached, a few houses no longer standing, grain silos crumpled, power line poles snapped like twigs, windows shattered all over, And through it all, there were a few minor injuries. No deaths recorded from this.

Where I live, we only got the wind gusts up to 76 MPH. Where I live, we had a small branch fall from a tree on the property line. Nothing else was damaged. Just 20 miles away, people’s lives had changed forever. Family heirlooms lost or destroyed. Farming equipment battered, the Ford dealership there has hundreds of thousands or more damage to their vehicles on the lot. People not able to get back into their homes. Made me think for a minute.

We are all guilty of complaining about things tht we shouldn’t. Right now, around here, we are back to the basics. Helping out our neighbors who are going through this devastation. Back to helping however we can. We have had a state of Emergency declared for the town and other areas that are more rural. All you have to do is look at the pictures and remind yourself that sometimes our wants need to be put aside for the needs that we have or others.
