AI is becoming the hottest thing for everyone to use today. From making little birthday greetings to creating a whole new photo with just a couple clicks on an old picture. While there are some really interesting and possibly good things about AI, I would like to discuss the concept of it in writing and literature.
A few years ago, I wanted to find a unique Christmas gift for my mother. I looked at a lot of things and they all just seemed, well blah at that moment. While scrolling on Facebook an ad popped up showing a personalized story. Well, this is interesting. I clicked on the link to check out the website. While perusing the site I discovered you just had to answer a few questions about the person I was creating this story for and they inserted the answers in a few specific spots in the story and voile, a personalized story for my mother. It was cool and interesting. When she opened on Christmas, she was so elated that I knew I had done what I had wanted to achieve. This was done with AI. In this usage and platform, I believe it is pretty cool and useful.
Today I am seeing ads for full length stories. There is an author’s name on the link to click to read it. I have clicked on a link thinking I was going to read a story that was well written only to realize that it was not. If you are going to create a WHOLE novel using AI and promote it as if YOU wrote it, you are cheating readers as well as yourself. There are a lot of mistakes in that story. It doesn’t flow, the characters change dialogue and it is very very confusing, it’s cheating. Pure and simple. You are cheating. If you want to write a story and are struggling, work with someone that you trust. Talk it out. Collab with them. Co-author with them. Whatever it is don’t use someone else’s formula and answer a few questions and call it a best seller. Especially if you are going to send it to a publisher. Now I know more and more people are self-publishing (I will discuss my opinion on that another time) so that’s a whole other thing.
There is SO much creativity out there and stories to be told. I just know it to be true. Whether it be a song, a painting, a story, a tattoo design, a quilt it doesn’t matter. You need to be true to you and tell your “story” however you can. Uniqueness is king in my very humble opinion. We do need more of it in this world of lemmings.
